  477.             Microsoft® Windows® 2000 Server to Novell NetWare Version 
  478.             5.0. Microsoft believes that customers are no longer looking for 
  479.             single or limited-purpose server operating systems—they require a 
  480.             server operating system that can play a multi-purpose role. For 
  481.             reasons outlined in this white paper, Microsoft believes that 
  482.             Windows NT® Server will meet the customer requirements of a 
  483.             multi-purpose operating system today, and in the future.</p>
  484.  
  485. <p>The 
  486.             choice 
  487.             of a server operating system that an organization will live with 
  488.             for years is not based merely on the functionality of a particular 
  489.             version of a product. It is a strategic long-term decision 
  490.             driven by the demands the organization has for a platform on 
  491.             which to build solutions for their business problems. And the demands 
  492.             that organizations place on server operating systems are 
  493.             expanding rapidly. From basic file and printer sharing, these have 
  494.             grown to include communications, Internet, management, and 
  495.             large-scale distributed applications. These increasingly diverse 
  496.             demands require that the server operating system of choice be a 
  497.             multi-purpose platform capable of providing a comprehensive and 
  498.             integrated set of services while excelling in each individual 
  499.             role.</p>
  500.  
  501. <p>Microsoft and Novell have fundamentally different 
  502.             approaches to delivering server operating systems. Microsoft Windows 
  503.             2000 Server was designed from the beginning as a multi-purpose 
  504.             platform with a proven robust foundation and has evolved to offer a 
  505.             rich set of Web, communications, and applications services. Novell 
  506.             NetWare was designed when customers needed a network operating 
  507.             system whose primary purpose was to provide shared access to 
  508.             resources such as files and printers. NetWare was not architected 
  509.             with a robust foundation capable of enabling a multi-purpose 
  510.             platform. This is borne out by the fact that few customers use 
  511.             NetWare as an application server for demanding functions such as 
  512.             transaction processing database or ERP applications or to serve 
  513.             large scale Internet sites. Few server applications are designed to 
  514.             run on NetWare and software vendors such as Lotus have announced 
  515.             that they are discontinuing development of server applications for 
  516.             NetWare due to lack of customer demand.</p>
  517.  
  518. <p>NetWare 5 does offer new functionality to NetWare users such 
  519.             as native TCP/IP support and kernel improvements. However, these 
  520.             features have been part of Windows 2000 Server from the start. 
  521.             NetWare 5 does not include many other features that Windows NT 
  522.             Server 4.0 offers today, nor the enhanced functionality that Windows 
  523.             2000 Server will deliver. In some cases, NetWare 5 requires 
  524.             expensive add-on products to match some of the capabilities of 
  525.             Windows NT Server 4.0.</p>

  527. <p>Customers who are making a strategic decision on a server 
  528.             platform should compare the functionality of NetWare 5 with the same 
  529.             features available today in Windows NT Server 4.0 and those now in 
  530.             testing in Windows 2000 Server. As you will see in the following 
  531.             section and the detailed features analysis that follows, Windows NT 
  532.             Server 4.0 is built on a better architected foundation and offers 
  533.             more comprehensive integrated functionality than NetWare 5.0 today.

  590.             the customer.</p>

  904.             in Windows NT Server 4.0 is Active Server Pages (ASP). ASP provides 
  905.             the framework for extending COM-based applications to the Web. In 
  906.             addition, organizations can also use scripting to develop and deploy 
  907.             highly dynamic Web sites and provide connectivity to just about any 
  908.             type of data.</p>

  910. <p><b>Windows 2000 Server</b> adds process accounting 
  911.             and CPU throttling, distributed authoring and versioning, digest 
  912.             authentication. NetWare 5/FastTrack offers none of these
